Perm Today

Perm is the first city in Europe to see the sun rise. 

The city of Perm is the most easternly city in Europe as it is located in the Urals forming  a natural  borderline between Europe and Asia. Geographic location: 58° 00' 50'' northern latitude, 56° 14' 56'' eastern longitude.

The city of Perm covers the territory about 800 square kilometers  which makes it the fourth largest in Russia following Moscow, St.Petersburg and Volgograd.

Perm is an administrative centre of the Perm Region. About half of industrial potential of the region is concentrated in Perm .

Perm is located on both banks of the Kama river which is Europe’s fifth longest river after the Volga, the Danube, the Ural and the Dnieper. The Kama is 1805 km long and is the largest Volga’s tributary.  The Kama flows through the city for 70 kilometers, being watered by around 200 smaller rivers and creeks, and this makes it an important transportation route joining together European and Asian parts of Russia.  It is through the Kama and the system of canals that Perm boasts the access to the five seas (namely, the Caspian, the Azov, the Black, the Baltic and the White).

The residents of Perm call their region “Prikamye”, meaning “the area around the Kama”, in recognition of the river’s role in the development of the region.

Perm enjoys the moderate continental climate. Winter comes in November with temperatures falling down to zero quite unexpectedly and snow covering the ground and staying until the start of April, or even May – in the north of the region. 

The average winter temperature is - 17° С. Winters may be quite cold and long, with lowest temperatures at - 44° C.

Summers are generally mild but may become quite hot. The warmest month – July- may show the average at  +20°С, with temperature maximum at + 38° С.

The average humidity is 70-80%. Annual precipitation varies from 550 to 800 mm.
